The 1820 US Census of Matawasca (Madawaska) Parish, Maine, although included in the returns for Penobscot County, is not to be found on the microfilm copy. The transcription on these pages is from a transcription of the 1820 census published in a series of documents submitted in 1829 by the United States in the arbitration over the border between Maine and New Brunswick (see below for full bibliographic citation). Key to column headings:
|
Clef aux titres des colonnes:
Firstname Lastname = Nom du chef de famille |
Important Note: The source of this transcription included information only from the first twelve columns after names; that is, the number of free white males and free white females, and the number of foreigners not naturalized. It did not include other information asked in the 1820 census: number of "Free Colored" males and females (it also asked about number of slaves, but for Maine that question was irrelevant because Maine had entered the Union as a free state where slavery was outlawed); number of people in each household working in agriculture, commerce and manufacturing; how many people in the household who were not taxed. |
Since I have not been able to find the original census returns, I do not know what page numbers these returns would have been in the original compilation of the census of Penobscot County, nor what the line numbers are. The current transcription is broken into pages of 40 lines each, and given line numbers, only for the convenience of the web site. They do not represent the page or line numbers in the original census returns. |
Note: Madawaska's population was made up mostly of French-speakers. The census taker seemed not to be familiar with French or French names. Thus very few of the names are spelled correctly, most are a very rough approximation of what the name sounded like to an English speaker who did not know French. Please see also Information on French names in the 1820 US Census of Madawaska. |
