Immigration into the valley
From the late 1700s through the 1800s people moved into the valley from Acadia, Quebec, Gaspé, New Brunswick, Maine, and other places.

Emigration from the valley
In the late 1800s and early 1900s many families moved out of the upper St.John River valley, to western US, New England, and other places.

First Nations / Native Peoples
The first inhabitants of the valley: Maliseet nation

Acadia
Expelled from Acadie in 1755 many Acadians ended up in the upper St.John River valley

Canada -- St.Lawrence River valley
Along with Acadians, many francophones from the St.Lawrence River valley moved to the upper St.John valley.

Maine & Massachusetts
The earliest English-speakers who settled came around 1820, and continued to migrate to the valley throughout the 1800s. Many of them came from Maine and Massachusetts

Baie des Chaleurs
A number of families moved from the Baie des Chaleurs, including the Gaspé peninsula, to the upper St.John valley

Irish & Scotch
Often migrating via New Brunswick.

Lumberjacks
A great attraction of the valley was its stands of timber. Lumberjacks came from the Kennebec and Penobscot valleys, from the Baie des Chaleurs, and from other regions. A forum to discuss the network of lumbermen in the valley.

Loyalists
Although not many Loyalists settled in the Madawaska settlement, many settled a bit downriver in what is today Victoria County.
