James Holmes

(All information on this page is from John Holmes Jr.)

James Holmes came to Trescott, Washington County, Maine, from Nova Scotia in 1833. He applied for citizenship in 1838, and was granted citizenship in 1844. (See transcript of naturalization papers below.) He was married to Sarah Simpson, who died giving birth to William Henry Holmes on 11 Jul 1849. She is listed in the 1850 mortality schedule, p.27, line 8.

At the time of the 1850 US census James Holmes was living in Salmon Brook, Aroostook County (p.162a), where he is listed as a farmer, born in Nova Scotia, 49 years of age.

In his naturalization statement, he said he was born in Amherst, New Brunswick (actually in Nova Scotia) in 1800.

He was likely descended from the Loyalists Holmes who went from Westchester, New York to Nova Scotia in the Spring of 1783.
