The reunion last week was a big hit. We made it only for two days but caught the parade, with my cousin Louis playing the part of ancestor Pierre Gagnon.
Here's the St John Valley Times article on it: Festival draws Gagnons and other Acadians to Madawaska

Alert: Maine proposes to restrict access to vital records
There's a proposal in the Maine State Legislature to limit all access to any vital records -- birth, marriage, death -- for 100 years from the event. The supposed goal has to do with identity theft, but apparently there's no evidence that this is really a problem in relation to these records. On the...

New Book!!! The Land in Between, by Beatrice Craig
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51K4eC92G9L._SS500_.jpg Beatrice Craig is the foremost historian of the Upper St John River Valley, and she's just published a book on the history of the Valley up to WWI. Here's the blurb: The "land in between" is the upper Saint John Valley, a regio...

Re: Loren Gagnon
I checked the Van Buren records, no Gagnons baptized in November or December 1872 or Jan 1873.

One more bit of info. Sifroi, son of Henri and Victoire Beaulieu, was married twice. First marriage, to Philomène Bourgoin (daughter of Barthélémi and Elisabeth Martin), at St. Basile on 7 Nov 1864. His second marriage was to Zité Martin (d. of Simon and Salomée Violette), at St.Léonard-Parent, 8 No...

Sifrois Gagnon
Rich, I think this is the Gagnon family you're referring to, they appear in the 1851 NB Census in St.Basile: http://www.upperstjohn.com/1851/stb5.htm#10 Lines 51-55 (Orry is anglicized phonetic spelling of Henri) 51 | 75 | Orry Gagnon | M | H | 58 | French | Farmer (tenant) | March 1838 | | House 52...

1840 New Brunswick Census of Madawaska Settlement online!
I've just put online a newly found census of the Madawaska Settlement undertaken for the Province of New Brunswick in early 1840. It lists names of land holders along the St.John from Grand Falls to the St.Francis, their place of origin, how long they'd lived in the settlement, and whether they were...

Christophe Marquis
A visitor asked me if I could find information on Christophe Marquis: I have a document with me stating that a Christopher Marquis of Hancock Plantation, in said County Yeoman , was one of three men who signed a deed, along with John Garet (Gueret) Madawaska Plantation, county of Aroostook and Hilai...

St-François-de-Madawaska parish page now online!
I've just put online a page on the St-François-Xavier de Madawaska parish . From 1846 until 1858 it was a mission parish of Ste Luce, served by Father Henri Dionne. In January 1859 it became its own, independent parish. Online documents so far include the census taken by Fr. Dionne of the St.Françoi...

1844 & 1850 Confirmations at Ste Luce
Just put online another document I recently discovered. A list of 340 persons confirmed at Ste Luce in late August 1844, and a list of 221 persons confirmed in July 1850. The 1844 document includes the age of each person confirmed. Check out the 1844 & 1850 Confirmations at Ste Luce I've include...

1858 census of / recenst de St-François-de-Madawaska
Along with the census of Ste Luce, Father Dionne also did a census of what was then the mission parish of St.François Xavier. I've transcribed it and put it online with a name index. It is linked to the Ste Luce page, since until 1859 St-François was a mission of Ste Luce. Check out the new main cen...
