Abbreviations and place names used in the 1850 US Census of Aroostook Co., Maine

The most common place where the census takers used abbreviations was in the "place of birth" column. Some are obvious, others not so.

A.Gt. = Academy Grant
Canada = when used alone refers to what is today Québec
Eng. = England
Gt. = Grant
Lower Canada = what is today Québec
Mass. = Massachusetts
Me. = Maine
N.B. = New Brunswick
N.H. = New Hampshire
N.S. or N. Scotia = Nova Scotia
N.Y. or N. York = New York
R.I. = Rhode Island
U.Canada = Upper Canada (what is today Ontario)
Va. = Virginia
