Below is the transcription of the 1840 US census of "Madawaska South of the St.John River" covering the area from about Fort Kent (the first name is located at the mouth of the Fish River) to a bit east of what today is Van Buren. Some of the communities that are now in the US (those west of the Fish River) are for some reason not included here, but show up instead in Madawaska North of the St.John, including Fort Kent and settlements westward on the St.John River and southward on the Fish River.
In 1840 the communities included in Madawaska South had a total of 1,584 inhabitants, living in 227 households. 389 people were working in agriculture, and a total of two in "learned professions and engineers." There were three schools and a total of 56 "scholars on public charge" (public school pupils); the schools are listed under the following individuals' names: Anselm Elbert (p.101), Francis Thibedeaux (p.103), and Paul Cyr (p.103); it is likely that they (or someone in their household) were the school teachers. 372 people over the age of 20 could not read or write: fully 59 percent of adults were thus illiterate.

This page was transcribed from and proofread against the
microfilm copy of the 1840 US Census.
Note:
Madawaska's population was made up mostly of French-speakers.
The census taker seemed not to be familiar with French or French
names. Thus very few of the names are spelled correctly, most
are a very rough approximation of what the name sounded like to
an English speaker who did not know French. In the annotations,
or in the annotations, or in the remarks (in parentheses), I have
noted the actual spelling for those individuals for whom I have
specific information. Please see also Information
on French names in the 1840 US Census of Aroostook, Maine.
