In the microfilm copy of the 1820 US Census of Maine (Reel No.M33-37), the population schedules for "Holton Plantation" and "New Limerick" Washington County, are missing, although numbers are given for both places in the "Recapitulation." The other place whose schedules are missing from the microfilm copy is "Matawascah." All three places were enumerated by True Bradbury.

The 1820 US Census of Houlton Plantation and New Limerick Plantation was included, along with the census of "Matawascah Parish" (Madawaska), in the evidence presented by the United States in the arbitration over the contested border between Maine and New Brunswick. (For more information see my page on the Border Dispute.) Apparently Bradbury's schedules were removed from the Maine census materials in order to be included in materials submitted in 1829 to the King of the Netherlands in his arbitration of the border dispute between the US and Great Britain. The transcription here is taken from that evidence, not from the microfilm copy of the census. As far as I can tell, this is the only existing contemporaneous source.

(Washington: Office of the United States' Telegraph, 1829), pp. 349-354. That transcription is from the National Archives and Records Administration Federal Population Schedules for the 4th Census of the United States in 1820.

This is the 1820 federal census for Washington County, ME.

Key to column headings:

Firstname Lastsname = Names of Heads of Family
(Numbers include the head of family)
0-10 = under 10 years old
10-16 = between 10 and 15 years old
16-18 - between 16 and 18 years old
16-26 = between 16 and 25 years old
26-45 = between 26 and 44 years old
45 . = 45 and older
Fo = Foreigners not naturalized
Important Note: The source of this transcription included information only from the first twelve columns after names; that is, the number of free white males and free white females, and the number of foreigners not naturalized. It did not include other information asked in the 1820 census: number of "Free Colored" males and females (it also asked about number of slaves, but for Maine that question was irrelevant because Maine had entered the Union as a free state where slavery was outlawed); number of people in each household working in agriculture, commerce and manufacturing; how many people in the household who were not taxed.

Since I have not been able to find the microfilm copy of the original census, it is impossible to tell whether there were any "Free Colored" males or females living in this area; also unknown is the breakdown by occupation. In addition, I do not know what page numbers these returns would have been in the original compilation of the census of Penobscot County, nor what the line numbers are. The current transcription is broken into 2 separate pages, and given line numbers, only for the convenience of the web site. They do not represent the page or line numbers in the original census returns.
